African Artists Foundation Presents First Exhibition: Master Artist Tola Wewe May 11 17 in the Lagos Civic Centre


The African Artists’ Foundation will be presenting its first major exhibition May 11th through May 17 th in the new Lagos Civic Centre, Ozumba Mbadiwe Road, Victoria Island, Lagos. This is the first art exhibit in the new Lagos Civic Centre and Mr. Wewe’s last show in Nigeria before an extended tour of Europe.

Tola Wewe

Tola Wewe is easily recognized as Nigeria's most famous living artist. He has won awards both nationally and internationally and has a passionate following among collectors in Nigeria. His works are on display in museums in Europe and the United States where he has also had numerous successful solo exhibitions. Last year he won the top Prize for theGuinness Artists’ Competitionand represented Nigeria at a solo Exhibition at the Corningsby Gallery in London and also held solo exhibitions in Germany and The Netherlands.

The Exhibition

A private viewing and cocktail party will be held on Friday, May 11 th from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Tickets are N 10,00 each. The exhibition will then continue for the remainder of the week with free entry to the public. Hours for the exhibition are Saturday, May 12 from 4:00 pm to 10:00 pm and Sunday through Thursday, May 13 – 17 from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm.

The exhibit’s opening on Friday, May 11 th will feature live music, entertainment, and discussions with the artist and curator, hors d'oeuvres and refreshments. This will be a first viewing of new Tola Wewe works, many unlike his previous work. A number of these works will be available for sale and not yet seen by any collector or dealer. The show’s curator is Azu Nwagbogu, an international art consultant and art dealer who has recently organized a number of successful exhibitions in Lagos.

African Artists' Foundation

The Sponsoring organization, the African Artists' Foundation, is a professionally managed Nigerian Foundation and the Civic Centre’s Resident Artistic Organization. It is the first Nigerian Foundation organized to be in full compliance with non-profit charitable organization requirements in the United States as well as Nigeria. 

The mission of the African Artists’ Foundation is to provide support to professional artists in Africa through healthcare, a pension fund for aging artists, scholarships for young artists, support for the professional development of women artists, international exhibits and community outreach programs to foster an enabling environment for the development and promotion of public health through artistic endeavours.?

Proceeds from the exhibition will fund African Artists’ Foundation public health initiatives, providing healthcare and health education to both Nigerian artists and the public at large.
