Residency Open Call
Format, QUAD, African Artists' Foundation, LagosPhoto Festival, HTE Africa and the Arts Council of England invite African artists living and working on the continent to apply for a fully funded residency.
We are looking for an artist with an established practice to visit the UK in Feb 2020 for a 3 week residency. The residency will take place in Derby at the QUAD artist studio. There will be opportunities to make new work, research and develop new ideas or build on existing projects. The residency artist also has the potential to be part of a group exhibition at QUAD gallery (to take place in April 2020) as part of FORMAT International Photography festival Off year programme. The residency will be hosted, and networking will be facilitated, but the residency will largely be self-directed; therefore, we expect the resident to be confident, proactive, resourceful, motivated and organize their own schedule to make the most of the time.
The New Vernacular | Did I stutter?
This open call is targeted at artists living and working in Africa working with any medium that involves photography or still image, either as the core practice or as the inspiration. We are looking for work that explores the intersection between language, form and imagery. The theme “The New Vernacular” is about work that demonstrates an uncommon fusion of visual cues, semaphores, self portraiture and linguistics. Contemporary Art is a universal language with the power to break down long established boundaries or reinforce them. This open call is for artists who understand how disparate elements such as object, sound, image and intention come together in image making, sculpture, drawing, portraiture, fashion and language to present new notions on self while exploring the changing visual vocabulary of society today.
The selected artists will receive funding to continue making work and will be invited to a fully-funded residency in the UK at QUAD in February 2020 and will have the opportunity to exhibit in April 2020.
QUAD is a leading centre for contemporary art and film, our technical teams specialise in the presentation and production of digital technology from AR/VR to projection mapping, interactive media, film, sound and more.
