The African Artists Foundation sponsors an exhibit each month by a new African artist in the new Lagos Civic Centre and combines this show with an awareness campaign for a major public health issue. This high-visibility, rotating exhibit at the Civic Centre is from a variety of disciplines including sculpture, photography, painting and textile works.
After the month-long exhibit at the Civic Centre, each of these exhibits travels to another community in Nigeria that would be unlikely to have the opportunity to see an exhibit of its type. The travelling exhibit also offers the opportunity to foster awareness of a public health issue of particular relevance to the host community. Public health concerns such as River Blindness, malaria, teenage pregnancy, violent crime, domestic violence and HIV
awareness are highlighted in communities throughout Nigeria.
In addition to the public health message promoted with each show, the AAF Artists participate in extensive community outreach. Programmes include hospital visits, art classes for mental health patients, individualized arts training for artistically gifted children in orphanages and ongoing support to a network of AAF young artists through arts training, artists in residence programs and the AAF Mentorship Program.
