Informal Justice Court
Melle Smets and Joost van Onna
The exhibition shows the latest work from the ongoing multidisciplinary research project Informal Justice Court that aims to find new ways of creating and accelerating justice for (awaiting trial) inmates in Lagos.
The project combines arts, academic research and the work of NGO’s and organizations from Nigeria and the Netherlands to do so. Every year nearly 15 million people around the world end up in prison cells and detention centers awaiting trial. Many will spend months or even years behind bars, without ever seeing a judge. In Nigeria and Lagos, prisons are also overcrowded and congested with awaiting trial inmates, who sometimes have to wait many months or years to see a trial.
The exhibition is made possible with generous support from the Netherlands Embassy in Nigeria and is hosted by the African Artists’ Foundation.
